EVs, IVs, and natures all affect stats, but they answer different questions. IVs describe a Pokémon's underlying stat potential, EVs describe how you trained it, and its nature shifts the relationship between two non-HP stats.

Keeping those three ideas separate makes breeding, catching, training, and reading competitive builds much easier.

IVs are the Pokémon's underlying stat values

In modern main-series games, each stat has an Individual Value from 0 to 31. Higher is usually better, but not always. Some strategies intentionally prefer a low Speed IV or low Attack IV because the team is using a mechanic where less can be advantageous.

For ordinary play, you can think of 31 as the normal target for a stat you care about. Competitive optimization becomes more specific only when a build has a reason to do something different.

EVs represent training investment

Effort Values are points earned or assigned through training systems. Modern competitive spreads commonly place up to 252 EVs into a stat, with 510 total EVs available across the Pokémon. That forces a choice: you cannot maximize every stat at once.

A simple attacker might invest heavily in Speed and its main attacking stat. A defensive Pokémon may split investment between HP and one or both defenses. More advanced spreads target exact survival or speed benchmarks.

Natures increase one stat and reduce another

Most natures increase one non-HP stat by 10% and reduce another by 10%. Five natures are neutral because the increased and decreased stat are the same. HP is not directly raised or lowered by nature.

This means nature is not just a personality label. It is part of the stat plan. A physical attacker that never uses Special Attack can often afford to lower Special Attack in exchange for more Attack or Speed.

The three systems stack together

When a final stat looks unexpectedly high or low, do not attribute it to one system immediately. Base stats, level, IVs, EVs, and nature all contribute to the final number.

That is why two Pokémon of the same species and level can have different stats even before held items, abilities, boosts, or battle effects are considered.

What matters during a normal playthrough?

You do not need perfect optimization to finish most story content. A useful approach is to choose sensible moves, avoid obviously conflicting natures when convenient, and train normally. Detailed IV and EV work matters much more when you are preparing for demanding battles or a competitive format.

Learning the systems is still valuable early because it helps you understand why a trained Pokémon performs differently from an untrained one.

What matters when building competitively?

Start with the role, then set the nature and EVs to support that role. After that, use IVs to remove unnecessary variance. This order keeps you from optimizing numbers that do not support the actual strategy.

If a build gives an unusual EV or IV value, look for the benchmark it is targeting. Exact spreads are most useful when you understand the matchup or speed tier they were designed around.
